Karl 'Kae' Leidsman, the artist, is a graphic illustrator by profession:
`I immediately said yes, when I was asked to make this comicstrip for the exhibition. For awhile, I have been finding ways to use my cultural heritage in context in my illustrations. A visit to Suriname was the inspiration.

It was a challenge to take a story from the slavery past and depict it in illustration. That is not frequently done. Given the fact that it is based on a real tale, and a true historic event, it has extra value.
